The Sad Story of the Two Graves

Rose walked out of the school and into the pouring rain. It was the school dance and Rose had come alone. She had a date but they had a fight and broke up last week. Rose knew now that she loved Seth and that if he thought about it, he did too. She saw Seth running in the field, which was dangerous, no one knows all what is hidden in the tall grass.
“Seth!” Rose called out; he stopped and turned around with a smile on his face and waited for her as the rain wetted his blond shaggy hair. Rose walked toward him. She now stood in front of her tall best friend and looked up into his sea grey eyes.
“What is it?” He asked looking down at her seeing her ruby red hair was getting soaked but her brown eye shined like little golden suns.
“I’ve thought it over,” She began taking in a shaky breath. If he told her no she wouldn’t know what to do. “I want to beg for you to take me back, Seth.” He seemed to think for a moment, which was rare for this always on the go seventeen year old boy. Seth sighed and was going to regret the next words for as long as he lived.
“Can’t right now. I just told Dannie I would be her boyfriend till she got her old one back that should take about a week.” Rose felt she had been punched. She knew that they fought and both knew now they were both wrong. But to say no for that reason just broke her.
“But Seth, I-.”
“I have to go, Ruby. I’ll see ya later.” He then took off towards his car and left Ruby there in her shining black dress and heels weeping on the hill.

Seth was driving Ruby to their favorite fast food joint in town and was going to beg for her to forgive him. He had a promise to keep last week and after seeing ho much that hurt her he promised never to do it again. He knew now that he loved her and after watching her weep on the hill last week knew she did too.
“Ruby, I’ve thought it over and I want to beg, on my knees if I have too, for you to forgive me. I’m so sorry I hurt you and I want to take you back.” It was like he knocked down the wall that was separating them. Ruby brightened up and agreed. They went to grab their food and started to head back to their spot, the hill. They were waiting for the light to turn green when it happened. It happened so fast that Seth to this day doesn’t know what he could have done to save her. A blood red car in front of them ran the light and hit Ruby’s side of the car. The car spun and Seth gripped Ruby’s hand and braced himself against the car door. The car spun into the next lane, which was empty when it slowed to a stop and Seth was unharmed. He got out of the car and rushed over to ruby’s side and opened the door, all the while yelling ‘call 911’ till he started to see someone pull out their phone from the cross walk.
The Ruby he saw was not the Ruby he knew his whole life. The door and been pointed and formed a strange way, like a spear head and went into to her middle. Her skin was pale and her lips shook. Her legs were tangled up in a way that should be in possible. Her right and was bleeding as well and she held it over her middle as Seth gently pulled her out. Seth looked into her eyes as he laid her on the ground and held her, her eyes still shinned bright like little golden suns.
“Is she okay?” Someone from the crowd called out and then saw the bloody young woman in the young man’s arms.
“Ruby, can you hear me?” Ruby coughed up some blood into her right hand before answering.
“What hit us?” She whispered. Seth had never seen her so weak before he knew she wasn’t going to make it if the anyone ever showed up.
“Don’t worry about that now. It’s going to be alright.”
“Are you hurt?” She started to cough this time into Seth’s chest. He didn’t think she knew she was coughing up blood and both were just fine with him. Ruby saw the blood on his shirt and felt the pain in her middle. She was dying and she knew it.
“Shhhh. I’m fine. And so are you. We both are going to be just fine.” Seth lied. He knew she was going to die and didn’t have much time left. Ruby saw the truth in his eyes and somehow felt at peace. She was going to die but in Seth’s eyes she saw that he loved her and she knew she loved him and that is why she was at peace. The truth of knowing was enough to do that.
“I’m going to die today, Seth. We both know that.” Her voice was soft and tears welded up in her eyes.
“No, no. You’re not. You can’t. I just became aware I need you, Ruby. Don’t leave me.” Seth begged as tears ran down both if their cheeks.
“Don’t make this any harder than it is, Seth. I love you and I’m glad to say I’ve never loved anyone but you.” The light in her eyes seemed to dim slightly Seth knew he had to hurry. She was almost gone.
“I love you too, Ruby. I’ll miss. And I promise never to love anyone but you, okay?” Ruby smiled and Seth smiled back.
“Okay.” Seth kissed her forehead then and they just stared into each other’s eyes for a moment then, she was gone. Died in his arms. His first and only true love gone.

If you visited their hill today, like Seth does every day, you would see a small grave stone covered with flowers that Seth always brought.
The grave read:
Here lies Ruby, forever missed.
Loving daughter.
Wonderful friend.
Forever loved by Seth.
June 7, 1995
June 5, 2012
Seth never did love anyone else and he died at the age of twenty-two of a sickness he had since he was twelve that only his parents knew about.
And on that day he finally told his parents,
“I’m going to see Ruby.” Not Ruby’s grave not their spots all over town. But Ruby, the real Ruby. And even though that day was his last it was his happiest. So now if you visited the hill there would be two graves side by side. Finally being able to truly see each other.
